Artist Statement

My work focuses on autobiographical images from my past, such as a hat--
my father and grandfather were milliners; a mannequin torso-- dressed
with shirts, ties, etc. when the hat shop became a haberdashery; a wine
press—wine was made in our Brooklyn cellar, the press was imposing and iconic; or a
crucifix--my mother was a devout catholic and I was an alter boy.
I find these images and experiences to be powerful metaphors for the
creative process, since they share three essential elements: transformation,
alchemy and ritual. They resonate in my consciousness and echo, like true archetypes, in the natural and urban environments around me. They become central to my work as they transform into anthropomorphic or more ambiguous shapes and forms. Mythic,
spiritual, and anthropological references reoccur. These "subjects" are often
depicted within loosely defined architectural forms.
